I AM ISIGO
IAMISIGO takes great pride in its Ghanaian roots, constantly influenced by its past and current state. Ghana which means “Warrior King,” is a country that contains both the Akan Kingdom and Asante nation. Utilizing the Kente weaving technique, which is a blend of silk and cotton fabric, their 2016 collection was an ode to the Ghanaian Queen "Yaa Asantewaa" who led Ghanaians in the fight against the British in 1900. Embodying strength, relentlessness yet beauty and elegance all at once— this particular collection paid homage to this fearless warrior in all aspects. Even the nwentoma, or embellished smock used by the Queen to conceal her female identity while at war has been used by the designers to continue the fight for fashion recognition. Each line, color and design embedded onto the nwentoma holds significance for each African clan. Another element of Ghanaian history the brand prides itself in.
With a primary focus on minimalism, the Ghanaian/Nigerian/French based label is an outspoke breath of fresh air of what the fashion industry can be again. Established by Bubu Ogisi in 2009 and rebranded in 2013, IAMISIGO doesn’t just stop with clothing, they also do furniture, art and design.
